Student Connections

The relationship between teacher and student should be special. The more special it is, the more influence we will have with students – and they will have with us. Enjoying such a teaching advantage requires specific teacher actions that must be employed before students will be drawn into a teacher's orbit. Here are some suggestions for forming those bonds with students:

1. Show students individually by word and deed that we want a relationship. Even when we disapprove of what a student does, we must never cause a student to think we don't like him or her as a person.

2. Reveal your passion for teaching and for life. Proclaim the virtues of work, effort, and achievement. Rather than saying, "I need you to do this," say, "You ought to do this for yourself because..."

3. Position yourself to get students to say "yes" to you quickly and frequently. You'll find the task easier if you start by asking questions that are likely to get "yes" responses. Getting students to say "yes" helps establish the right mindset and helps them bond quickly with you as a result.

4. Look for chances to help students without waiting for them to ask for help. Whether a student is struggling with an assignment or trying to make the team, you have considerable support you can offer.

5. Learn when to remain quiet. There is a time to listen and relate to students by absorbing. Many student-teacher relationships become one-sided. You'll have a lot more teachable moments once you learn how to interpret when they're ready for your guidance.

The research is clear and conclusive: A teacher's relationship with students does make a difference. Students will work harder for you and will be willing to take more risks. The relationships we have with students also impact our success and satisfaction as substitute teachers.

What are some other ways you have been able to form bonds with the students you are teaching? What motivational techniques do you use to encourage students' passion for learning and achievement?
