In second grade, my teacher was quite ill, so I was blessed to have the talented Sandra Peterson in District 281 in suburban Minneapolis...she continues to be my substitute role model to this day. (And while my mom was also a sub for 20+ years, I was never in her classroom as she started subbing after I graduated high school.) It was my great thrill to contact her many years later when she was the state president of the teacher's union, and I had just finished graduate school and was working in the state attorney general's office. Sandra was loving, but firm. She expected the very best in us. She taught us about character education long before that was a common phrase. I now know she had high expectations of herself. When I struggle and have a challenging day, I think, "What would Mrs. Peterson do?"
