Avoid Wasting Time

As we all know, class time is precious. There is often a lot that needs to be accomplished in the lesson plan. In the Substitute Teacher Handbook we discuss traps that substitute teachers often fall into. I would like to add another trap to those listed here: the "time wasting" trap.

Students love when substitute and permanent teachers fall into this trap. We as teachers mistake their enthusiasm as an interest in the topic we are discussing. Whereas students know that if they act curious about our hobbies or interests the less work they will likely have to do.

Students love to draw the teacher off task and a teacher who is telling stories or talking about him/herself is the easiest target.

Don't fall into this trap. It isn't necessary for students to know your background in order to respect you. Avoid telling them about all of the experience you've had teaching and show them. If you still feel that their interest is genuine, tell students you would be happy to discuss it when their work is complete.
